Kennedy tips Abracadabras for Champion Hurdle tilt

Jack Kennedy believes Abracadabras could be a Champion Hurdle contender next year after his impressive second in the Supreme Novices’.

After breaking his leg at Leopardstown in February, jockey Kennedy missed out on rides at the Cheltenham Festival last month and was instead forced to watch on as the Gordon Elliott-trained Abracadabras finished runner-up in the Supreme Novices.

Kennedy would have been on board were it not for his injury but Davy Russell took the ride and nearly triumphed as Shishkin just held on for the victory.

Kennedy now believes the six-year-old can fight for the Champion Hurdle crown in 2021, as he told the Racing Post: “He ran a cracker. He is a pleasure to ride as he just picks up whenever you want him to.

“He has so much speed. It is great for the yard to hopefully have a Champion Hurdle contender next season.”

Meanwhile, Kennedy says he should be fit to resume racing at the end of July and has targeted the Galway Festival as a possible comeback date, although all meetings in Britain and Ireland are currently off due to the coronavirus outbreak.

He added: “The recovery is going well, and I would hope to be back riding out in the next month to six weeks. I’d definitely hope to be back in time for Galway. The process is a little bit slower than the last time I broke my femur as the fracture was higher up last time.

“Where it happened this time cannot take as much weight. I’m still on crutches at the moment but I’m putting as much weight on it as I can and it’s getting better all the time.”
