Crowley getting to grips with Derby runner

Trainer Hugo Palmer says jockey Jim Crowley has been getting to know Emissary ahead of Saturday’s Investec Derby run.

Emissary is one of 16 runners to be named in the final declaration stage for the Epsom showpiece, and Palmer has confirmed he will run in first-time cheekpieces.

Crowley visited Palmer’s Newmarket yard on Thursday to have a light run out with the three-year-old as they eye a major upset this weekend.

“Jim had a sit on Emissary this morning, in human terms they went for a little jog to begin their understanding,” said Palmer.

“He said he was a gentleman and a nice balanced horse for Epsom.

“It all went smoothly and I’m happy with how he is.”

The half-brother to 2010 Derby winner Workforce, who came a close second to Khalifa Sat in the Listed Coral / British EBF Cocked Hat Stakes last month, will go off from stall four with Crowley aboard.
